PREZSEZ

Hello Action Ski & Snowboard Club!

We have just completed four of the six 2024 Action Ski Trips that showed plenty of excitement from our participants.  Action small group ski & snowboard trips (12 – 24 people) seem to deliver big smiles wherever we travel to.  The more trips we participate in, the more mountain friendships can be expected.

In mid-April the Action board will start planning 2025 destinations, so stay tuned for new and repeat favorite destinations. Action’s Mammoth Super Bowl trip is being drafted, and likely we will lodge at the Mammoth Mountain Inn again, hopefully under similar terms.  Based on feedback, we are considering this trip to be extended to four days (Saturday – Wednesday).

We received a very nice letter from our Just in Time Foster Youth donations, which should make us all proud.  We are including the letter in this Newsletter.

See you at the next Action Event!

Cheers, Roger

ACTION MAMMOTH SUPER BOWL SKI TRIP

The Action Super Bowl trip started from a new parking location, which allowed everyone to remain parked without fear of having their vehicle towed.  The new location in Carmel Mountain Ranch seems to be ideal for most Actioneers.  Sadly, several early birds were told that there is no eating or drinking on the bus by the bus driver.  Fortunately, trip-leaders were able to scrap these unrealistic bus driver rules, so we could be on our way.

We had over 30 Actioneers part take in the Super Bowl party, where everyone was fed with a full meal and then some.  What an exciting game that was, but many were only interested in new the commercials, haha.  A few were lucky to take home the bacon in the Football Pool.

Unfortunately, the group encountered three emergency room visits during this short trip, and fortunately everyone was able to board the home bound bus.  Wishing everyone a quick recovery!

On Monday several groups congregated at Tusks and the Yodler for lunch (yes, this is our pattern), and about 20 people joined in on a trip to the Village in the evening, where we wandered into the Distillery for beverages, dinner, live music and many laughs.

Besides these main events, there were a few jacuzzi parties and other shenanigans, where you just had to have been there.  Many belly laughs were noticed during this trip, so that will be our challenge to top these in 2025.

See you on the slopes, Roger.

PANORAMA MOUNTAIN SKI TRIP

Recently a large group of Actioneers spent five days at Panorama Ski Resort in the Purcell Mountains in British Columbia.  We flew into Calgary, Alberta where we were met by two small buses (necessary for all of our luggage) to transport us to the resort which is located a couple of hours southwest of Banff.  We stayed in the Approach Hotel located at the base of Panorama Mountain, just a few steps from the chair lift; very convenient!

Panorama Ski Resort was started in the 1960’s and has just under 3,000 skiable acres, half a dozen chair lifts, and a 4,256 vertical foot drop; one of the largest in North America.  Unfortunately, there had not been much recent snow fall so the blue and green runs, though pretty well groomed, were hard packed and fast requiring us all to be extremely careful when trying to set an edge and make turns.  Especially challenging for our two snow boarders Roger Hiltpold and Bridget Hodges!  Several in our group, including Leah Clark, Suzanne Rogers, and Jeff Meyerson explored several black and double-black diamond runs off the top of the mountain, skied down steep slopes through the trees and claimed they found remote patches of powder.  Alas, I did not have the courage to follow them… 😊
The first morning many of us joined a tour with two “Mountain Friend” hosts who took us around the mountain and pointed out beautiful views along with the various chair lifts and runs available.  They were very helpful and informative and many of us continued with them after lunch.  At the end of the day most everyone met at the T-Bar & Grill for an enjoyable après ski happy hour which lasted well into the evening.

The rest of the week went smoothly with partly sunny days and no crowds. Janet Katz and I stuck to the blues and greens and skied a lot with Roger, Jessica Youngs, and Dale Dalrymple plus various others in our group.
The group met for two more Action events during the week; a delicious group dinner at the Alto restaurant next to the hotel and another delightful après ski happy hour on the last day.

All in all, it was a great trip!  I wish we’d gotten some fresh snow but at least nobody got hurt (except for me; hairline fracture of my left thumb from a

Fall on the last day - what an idiot…) and everyone had fun visiting a new ski resort!  Thanks to everyone who helped me in running the trip.
