NEWSLETTER December 2023

PREZSEZ

We hope this final Action newsletter of 2023 will greet you with smiles and ready to celebrate the holidays with family and friends.  Besides the excitement behind family & friends’ gatherings, I particularly get excited during this time of year for three reasons:

  1. We made it to the end of another Action-filled year that hopefully brought us near some memories to cherish and reflect on in the future.
  2. A chance to regroup and plan for bigger and better things for the new year.
  3. The new ski season has kicked off with Action leading six ski trips to fantastic destinations.

The holiday season is also a special time to be thankful for what we have and reach out to the less fortunate.  With the youth mental health crisis evolving from many angles including the side-effects of the lengthy pandemic, the Action board has decided to switch gear this year and raise funds for a charity that helps transition foster youths achieve self-sufficiency and well-being, after departing from foster care to be on their own at the age of 18.  We are currently welcoming credit card donations online HERE at actionski.org for the “Just in Time” charity, and will be accepting donations until the next General Meeting at Arterra on January 3rd, 2024.  We have already raised $400 to this day, and the Action board thanks for your generosity.

The Action Board is thankful for your continued membership support as we all look forward to celebrating 2024 ski season accomplishments with you at Action’s biggest and best “Year End Party” that is free to members on July 13, 2024 (save the date) at the Carlsbad Discovery Center @ Agua Hedionda Lagoon. The event is ready for the first 80 members only registrations.

Cheers to all Actioneers and see you on the slopes!

Roger

SUSHI BOAT PARADE OF LIGHTS

December 10, 2023

Unlike the inclement weather situation that forced us to postpone this event in 2022, the Sushi boat went off without a hitch.  The weather was perfect and there was no wind, which allowed the group of 60+ Action & Friends enjoy the Condor Sushi Boat.

Like every year, we were welcomed by the same Sushi chefs (David and company), who entertained the group with fine sushi and high-quality sake.  Captain Scott joined this year again with his trusty crew.

To top off the evening, all guests were greeted by the best bartenders ever (Suzanne, Leah & friend Javier, and Carole,) who made sure nobody went home thirsty.

The Condor casted off a 5PM sharp and once again, we were one of the first boats to park right in front of the Star of India for the most majestic holiday views in all directions.  Holiday spirits were flying high on the Condor fishing boat.  The “Boat Parade of Lights” was yet another highlight that the entire group was able to enjoy.

On a quasi-sad note, Captain Scott is planning to sell the Condor, so he can focus on sailing around the globe.  He will do his best to convince the buyer to continue our annual tradition for the Boat Parade of Lights at the San Diego Harbor.  Fingers crossed.

Thank you all for joining Action Ski Club on this holiday warm-up event!

Roger & the best bartenders ever: Suzanne, Leah, Carole, Javier

Respectfully Christmas

In early December a dozen Actioneers met for dinner at The Henry  restaurant in Coronado followed by a performance of Respectfully Christmas at the Lamb’s Players Theatre. With a talented cast comprised of Lamb’s musical hits Million Dollar Quartet and R-E-S-P-E-C-T, the audience was treated to a 90 minute festive revue of great Christmas classics.

Whether they were dressed in Santa dresses, sequined outfits, suits, or holiday sweaters, the actors got the entire audience in the holiday spirit with outstanding singing, dancing, and instrumentals including piano, guitar, bass, violin, and drums.  I was struck by how talented the musicianship was and the beautiful harmonies of the singers; everyone sounded perfect!

From Johnny Cash and Brenda Lee to Elvis Presley, Mel Torme, Karen Carpenter and countless others, the music was truly a trip down memory lane.  There are too many to list here, but just a few of the hits we heard included  Run, Run Rudolph”, “Christmas Time Is Here”, “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree”, “Baby It’s Cold Outside” and one of my favorites, “Blue Christmas”.

We all enjoyed this fantastic performance and I look forward to future great shows at Lamb’s Players Theatre. Thanks to everyone who came out and Happy New Year!

John Thomas
