Super Bowl – February 7

More than 20 Action members attempted their 2021 Luck in the Super Bowl Pool, which due to circumstances had to be a virtual event.  This event proved that with sheer random luck, you can still win, but more importantly, add a bit of excitement to watching a Super Bowl blow-out game.

Congratulations to the big winners, in order of pay-check:

  1. Diana Mertrude $300
  2. Debra Reid $150
  3. Jessica Youngs $120
  4. John Thomas $80
  5. Chris Lynn $50

We at Action hope this added a bit of excitement to your big game, and are now more hopeful to be able to hold this event in person again in 2022.

New Orleans Cocktails and Cuisine Virtual Cooking Class Review

February 15

The Action board wandered into new territory, hosting a cooking and cocktails class via Zoom.  Leaders included:

  • Carolyn the moderator and orchestration lead
  • Carole the food prep and cooking chef
  • Leah the New Orleans cocktails designer barista
  • Cindy the event mastermind
  • Roger the film crew

While Carolyn was walking the dozen participants through the history, food preparation and cooking efforts, Carole showed her off her cooking talents with Cajun style Gumbo and red beans and rice. Most of the audience observed, while a few participated live with their cooking experiments.  From experience, I can say that the resulting meals were “Most Delicious”!

To further enhance the Cajun atmosphere, Leah showed off two typical Mardi Gras cocktails:

  1. French 75 is a cocktail made from gin, Champagne, lemon juice, and sugar. It is also called a 75 Cocktail, or in French simply a Soixante Quinze. The drink dates to World War I, and an early form was created in 1915 at the New York Bar in Paris
  2. Sazerac (claimed to be the first ever mixed cocktail)

Thank you to all participants for sharing your Mardi Gras experiences.  Hopefully we were able to up your arsenal in the kitchen and bar with some New Orleans culture.

Special gratitude to all who helped put this grandiose event together.

General Meeting @ Olive Grove Park Review - February 20

Action was finally able to host our monthly General Meeting and Happy Hour in person at Olive Grove Park.  Weather was fine, although a bit on the cooler side, which likely kept a larger group away.

While Alexis and Scott inquired about next season’s ski trips, Melinda and Dan Bender also attended the event.  Diane Mertrude also joined us.

With daylight savings around the corner, we will start planning these in person events on Wednesday evenings again.  The next in person General Meeting is now scheduled for April 7th: 5.30 – 7PM, where we are planning to bring back the raffle tickets.

We sure hope to see you then.

Roger

Little Cottonwood Canyon —  60 Hours in the Abyss
Ever thought it would be a dream come true to be stuck up in Little Cottonwood Canyon when so much snow came down they had to close the canyon? You might want to rethink that dream. After eight feet of snow in four days, starting Monday February 15th at about 11 pm, the canyon went into “Interlodge” protocol for 60 hours. During interlodge guests are required to remain indoors due to extreme avalanche danger. While it is typical to have a few interlodge events each year, they usually only last a few hours. Imagine being in your room at Alta or Snowbird and looking out at the magic but not being allowed to go play. For 60 hours! Even worse, on the second day all guests at some lodges were put under maximum security and head to head to the lobby or locker rooms and hunker down while the most high risk avalanche control work was performed. Think 3 hours in a locker room with a bunch of strangers during a pandemic. What fun! Who knew that Utah State Route 210- the roadway that goes up Little Cottonwood Canyon has an Avalanche Hazard Index of 766- the highest in North America. After hearing of this terrible saga for the guests I can almost feel sorry for them, but then after 60 hours locked in with howitzer artillery and bombs dropped from helicopters exploding above, the lodge doors opened on Thursday, but the canyon road didn’t, and the guests had all of Alta’s and Snowbird’s glorious terrain and powder to themselves!
