NEWSLETTER  |  Hello 2021

NEWZ SEZ

We are working hard to keep Action an active club, despite the lack of trips. We just hosted Yappy Hour and The Perfect Pairing: Beer and Chocolate. These are unique to Action. You can virtually thank our hard working, and poorly-paid Event Chairs, Cindy Luchetti + Carolyn Geissinger.  More Virtual events are brewing — Stay Tuned for a Virtual Book + Wine Club (TBD) and our first Easter Egg Decorating Contest (TBD).

Ok, now for some really important stuff. This might just be the greatest Superbowl ever, unless your team was actually in one!  Don't miss out on Action's Superbowl Pool. See below for details.

As Action's Newsletter Chair, I depend on ski trip, event photos and stories to fill these "pages".  We would love to hear your stories, things you discovered this past year, you may not have, if things we "as usual". Favorite movies, books or TV shows you discovered. This is your club, share your lists, stories and pix. Send to newsletter@actionski.org. I'll do the rest.

Yappy Hour
- and a few Meows

Tuesday January 12thsome furry earthlings and their devoted Actioneers joined for an online happy hour. Conversation varied from bragging to groaning, with lots of appreciative murmurs in between. Cindy Luchetti won the display of most animals, with two dogs and one kitty. Annette the vet actually has more but she treated us to only one lovely feline. Linda Katz and Diane Medina held up the kitty end of the event too! Most Actioneers have already met Stella-- who owns Janet Katz and by proxy also John Thomas—at various End of Year Parties. (Hey, remember parties?!) Since Allie has gone over the rainbow bridge Rick Cole had to bring a stuffed prairie dog as his date. Leah Clark has two white fluffies of energy. Naturally there was me, Nancy, with my two geriatric pugs. And did you know our prez Roger Hiltpod has a gorgeous handful of 9 month old border collie mix? Our grand finale was a good natured pet porn contest. We all held our pets’ furry butts up to the Zoom camera and took a vote on cutest butt. The cat winner was Diane’s Sammy, and the dog winner was TOMMY, who owns Tom Walters, and the name jokes just write themselves, so insert one of those here: ________. Nothing like a wonderful fur friend to help you get through a pandemic. Hope to see you guys IRL soon. Meanwhile, remember to spay/neuter!

Perfect Pairing: Beer + Chocolate
A fabulous “Perfect Pairing” Happy Hour was hosted last Saturday night, January 30th, by our Activity Chairs Cindy Luchetti and Carolyn Geissinger.  To find that perfect pairing, an enthusiastic crowd of 20 Actioneers mixed and matched gourmet chocolates with a variety of different beers.

We began the tastings with a slightly sweet, malty Pilsner from Urquell followed by a Sculpin IPA from our local brewery Ballast Point.  These two lighter beers were more challenging to find a chocolate match than the darker more full-bodied selections, also included in the tasting.  Cindy and I sampled a variety of chocolates from the local chocolatier, Chuao and from Chi an exclusive truffle maker here in San Diego. The two best choices, in our opinion, were the Chi Chocolat Chili Tangerine Truffle with the Pilsner and Chuao’s Spicy Maya Chocolate Bar paired with the crisp, hoppy IPA.

The last two beer selections were Big Sky’s Brown Ale, Moose Drool and Garage Brewing’s Marshmallow Milk Stout.  These rich beers were paired with Chuao’s Pretzel Toffee Twirl Bar and Chi’s Chocolat Whisky Truffle.  Both were yummy!  As you can imagine, some of our Actioneers came up with their own favorite combinations. The beer tasting kits came with six chocolate selections served with 4 beers. The other chocolates presented were Chuao’s Potato Chip Chocolate Bar and their Baconluxious Chocolate Bar.

The group voted and it was decided that the Chi Chocolate Chili Tangerine Truffle was the go to choice for chocolate, as it was delicious with all four beers.  The Pretzel Toffee Twirl was a big hit with both the darker beers.

Prior to the tasting, Cindy emailed a short Power Point presentation for participants to review containing tasting tips and pointers for choosing the best glassware for your favorite beer.

Thank you to all who participated!! Cindy and I look forward to seeing you soon. Please check Action’s website for more upcoming fun events.

COVID UPDATES AND MEDICAL TID-BITS

Information gathered by Rick Cole

if you're looking for vaccinations in general, this site below, hosted by the CDC, might be worth checking out. So far Covid-19 is not on the list of vaccinations to choose from — the CDC is waiting until the supply of Covid vaccine begins to catch up with the demand.  Keep this link handy for later if you're looking for Covid-19 vaccine. You'll need your zip code and the names of the vaccines you want. Here's the URL. https://vaccinefinder.org/find-vaccine  Apparently the groups dispensing vaccines have the option of being listed or not. If they're listed they likely have some, or maybe excess doses of vaccine.  So a listing of a dispensing site might change day to day.

A second study on the effectiveness of regular mouthwashes for killing coronaviruses in the mouth has surfaced.  The first study got similar results.  They looked at the numbers of virus particles at 30 seconds, 1 minute and 2 minutes after gargling common mouthwashes. More viruses (usually 99%+) were dead at 1 and 2 minutes. This is good news for your dentist. Listerene rated as the top mouthwash. They didn't look at the virus numbers 1 to 8 hours after gargling, or maybe that's in the next paper.

Two docs have recently suggested that only one dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines should be given to double the number of people receiving some immunity.  The studies leading to CDC approval used 2 doses given 3-4 weeks apart.  An article in the NEJM suggested 80%-90% success in preventing infection with one dose of the Moderna vaccine. And a second dose could be given when doses become more available.

Other docs suggest that the one dose only plan might promote more resistance to the SARS-Cov-2 virus and that the one dose only plan has not be fully researched. No overall concensus has been reached.

An article on face masks was published Jan. 11 in Annals of Family Medicine. the authors reviewed 9 studies. People using cloth masks should consider the fit, number of filtering layers and material ... in general the cloth masks offer less protection that the medical masks, more layers tended to filter viruses better ... in my opinion the 3M Corporation model 1860 N95 may be the top mask but are difficult to obtain and usually controlled by large medical conglomerates .. the chinese made KN95 masks have generally passed CDC testing and may be the best masks available for most people.

For those looking for vaccinations in San Diego, there are a couple of web sites to check out: https://vaccinationsuperstationsd.com and https://myturn.ca.gov
