PREZ SEZ

Action Ski & Snowboard Club has selected a worthy organization to raise much needed holiday funds for.  This will be our second time in recent years that we chose theSan Diego Rescue Mission, which undoubtedly is in need of helping hands to feed the local poor and homeless.  This organization has done a noble job of helping folks that need it most in San Diego.  Please join Action Ski & Snowboard Club in providing a helping hand to the San Diego Rescue Mission as one of your holiday donation choices.

Financial donations can be placed here: https://www.sdrescue.org/actionski/

Mammoth is now open andBig Bear / Snow Summit opened on November 20th. Please check the local COVID regulations and be in the know, before you go. Should you be taking a ski trip in the near future, please consider sending a few pictures, names and paragraph to newsletter@actionski.org, so we can share your mountain joy.

To do our part to socially distance, please consider also sharing pictures of any local or remote out-door activities, such as hikes, bike rides etc. that you will be planning in the near future.  Posting your outdoor activities on our Action’s Facebook page will also help spread the adventure fun.

The Action board members continue to meet monthly and are ready to step into high gear, as soon as local regulations will allow us.  The entire board wishes all our core members nothing but the very best over the holidays season.  Stay tuned for better days before us!

Lastly, I want to thank the entire Action board team for their tireless support during these trying times.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

ACTION ACTIVITIES

General Meeting November 7th @ Olive Grove Park

Although rain was in the forecast for Saturday November 7th, a few Actioneers braved the nice weather for 1 hour and 40 minutes, until the rain ended our event.  It was great to see a few folks make the trek, including Melanie and Dan Bender, Chris Lynn and Eric, as well as Rick Cole, Jessica and myself.  As you can see, the weather was very lovely, although a bit on the cooler side of San Diego normalcy.  But who remembers normalcy?

Since the pandemic took over the world in the 2nd half of March, socializing has been placed on the back-burner, and currently with the purple tier rules in effect in San Diego, normalcy has been placed on the shelf for now.  As San Diego re-surfaces from this dreaded purple tier, we will be sure to kick-start our monthly General Meetings and a few in-person events.

With good news on the vaccine front, we can now be hopeful to returning to our social activities that we love in early 2021 (fingers crossed).  Action board had decided to reschedule the ski trip to Zermatt, Switzerland to 2022, due to the persistent uncertainties.  Trip details can be found on our website.

On Thursday, October 29th Action hosted a virtual Halloween Happy Hour and “Neck-Up” costume contest via zoom.  After settling in with their favorite witches brew, each participant had a few minutes in the spotlight to show off their costume and describe the inspiration behind it, or talk a little about a favorite Halloween experience.  A zoom poll was then taken to collect votes for best overall costume, most original costume and best story or inspiration.  Drumroll please, and the winners are….

Nancy Harrison for the best inspiration. Nancy described her love of all things glamorous, as epitomized by her stunning metal filigree mask.

Leah Clark won the contest for most original, bundled in her ski garb and posing in front of the Dolomites ski area in Italy-very apropos for Action.
There was really no competition though for the best overall costume which was won by Carolyn Geissinger. With her niece’s impressive face painting, she transformed into a beautiful butterfly!

Thanks to all those who participated for an entertaining and inspirational evening!  It was a nice escape from the spooky reality of 2020. Perhaps next year we can have an in-person Halloween event!

What You Need To Know About This Winter's Ski Season
California's resorts ask skiers and riders to plan ahead before hitting the slopes

Excerpts from visitcalifornia.com
See full story at https://www.visitcalifornia.com/experience/what-you-need-know-about-winters-ski-season/

Buy Tickets (Rentals and Lessons) Online Before You Go  Forget the typical last-minute rush for fresh powder—at most resorts, you won't be able to walk up to the ticket window at 9 a.m. and buy a lift ticket. Season pass holders get top priority for spots on the mountain, and skiers looking to buy daily tickets must purchase them online in advance...

Wear a Proper Face Covering  At all California resorts, face coverings over the mouth and nose are mandatory indoors and outdoors whenever social distancing isn't possible, which means almost all the time except for when you're bombing down the slopes. "The resorts are taking face coverings very seriously. That's one protocol that everyone is going to have to comply with,"...

Embrace Outdoor Dining  Another big change for this winter is limited indoor access. "People need to be prepared for the fact that there will be restrictions on being indoors, and that includes dining,”

Expect New Chairlift and Lift-Line Protocols  Skiers will ride the chairlifts only with their ski buddies, not with strangers. Lift lines will be engineered to eliminate "pinch points"—places where skiers get bunched together.

Celebrate This Winter's Upside  Skiing may look a little different this winter, but most snow lovers won't be fazed by masks and limited dining options. Instead, they'll be high-fiving. With resorts limiting the number of guests each day, skiers and riders will have more space on the mountain.
