ACTION FUNDRAISING

Every Action Counts, Now More Than Ever

Asking for help isn’t easy, but helping can be. Before the COVID-19 global pandemic, one in eight people in San Diego County faced hunger.

Now, due to school and business closures, job losses, rising food costs, disruptions to the food supply, and economic instability, Feeding San Diego is seeing an estimated 50 percent increase in need — and the effects are devastating.

Hunger Action Month is a nationwide awareness campaign during the month of September designed to mobilize the public to take action on the issue of hunger.

The United Nations Association of San Diego is endorsing Feeding San Diego’s campaign locally in recognition of the hunger-relief organization’s alignment with the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, specifically No Hunger (SDG#2), Climate Action (SDG#13) and Partnerships (SDG#17).

Action Ski Club has set a fundraising goal of $2500 to help those in our community in need. Your generous donations will be greatly appreciated.

Virtual Tour of Italy and Its Native Grapes

Since we can’t get together in person, on Saturday August 22nd, Actioneers gathered on Zoom for a virtual wine tasting. The theme of the tasting was “A Tour of Italy and Its Native Grapes”, and we tasted six amazing wines from all over in Italy. We were so lucky to have Petra Belitti, the wine specialist from Solare Restaurant, lead us through the tasting from her father’s house in Tuscany!! Her wine expertise and enthusiasm for the wines and the country was evident, and we had a lively virtual tour.

Unlike most wine tastings I’ve been too recently, where the order is invariably Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, etc., most of the varieties we tasted were new to me, and definitely expressed the breadth of Italian wine culture. I even found my new favorite white in the Greco from Campania, which is the area around Naples. The virtual format worked out really well, too, especially considering it was our inaugural virtual event. Leah and Cindy made up the wine tasting packages, which included 2-ounce pours of the first five wines, and a one-ounce pour of the last wine, Vin Santo, which is a dessert wine. There were also some little munchies, like Cheezits and oyster crackers, and a mini-biscotti to complete the Italian theme. At first two ounces of wine doesn’t seem like much, but the total 11 ounces of wine ended up being quite sufficient! There was only one small glitch in that the “Etna Rosso” ended up being an “Etna Rosado” due to a mix up in the shipment from wine.com, but given the hot weather that weekend it was nice to try the refreshing rose wine.

For those who are interested, the wines we tasted along with their region of origin were:

1. Greco - Terredore di Paolo - CAMPANIA
2. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi - Riserva Marotti Campi “Salmariano" -MARCHE

3. Etna Rosso - Pietradolce - SICILY

4. Nebbiolo d'Alba - Filippo Gallino - PIEMONTE

5. Vino Nobile - Corte alla Flora - TUSCANY

6. Vin Santo - Casa alle Vacche – TUSCANY

We are planning another virtual wine event in early November with a theme of “Wines for the Holidays”. Stay tuned for more details!!

Trail Less Traveled

Bike Ride

Nine Actioneers met at the DoubleTree parking in Carmel Valley at 9:45AM on Saturday August 29th, and we promptly departed at 10AM to challenge the 56 bike trail from El Camino Real to Black Mountain Road. The round trip as just under 17 miles, but required us to master a steady incline to Black Mountain Road. Kathy, Rich and eBike Jim decided to continue their challenge all the way to the 15, which added several miles to their accomplishment.

Other than one derailed chain (repaired by Rick), we were fortunate to avoided additional mishaps, and everyone returned safely. Although the trip was a bit taxing, especially on the trail to Black Mountain Road, the team seemed to enjoy the mostly down-hill return to Carmel Valley in exactly 2 hours.

We attempted to stop at a nearby Happy Hour, but the DoubleTree and Atrerra were still closed, so part of the group headed home, while four people were able to enjoy a brief Happy Hour at Ballast Point on Miramar Road.

Thank you: Kathy, Steve, Jessica, Rick, Denise, John T., Jim V., Rich for joining us on the trial and Susan Marie for adding to the Ballast Point adventure. Seems we’ll have to do another ride real soon!

Cheers, Roger

 ROCK BOTTOM

 An Action Love story

by Carmen and Gary Jahns

This photo is around 2001
A recent photo of the Jahns.

CARMEN:  I went to my first Action meeting on Dec. 2, 1999 to sign up for the Tahoe ski trip.  My friend had signed up already and urged me to be her roommate for the trip.  Action was meeting then in the upper room of the Rock Bottom Brewery on La Jolla Village Drive.  The room was very crowded and intimidating, but I found the line for sign-ups.

GARY:

That was only my second meeting.  I had been snowboarding for 5 years and wanted to go more frequently.  Plus, I liked the idea of meeting women who were active outdoors.  I lined up to sign up for a Mammoth trip, and saw that I was standing behind a very shapely lady.  Alas, she went to one sign-up table and I went to another.

CARMEN:

After joining Action and signing up for Tahoe, I went to get a drink and some appetizers.  I looked for a table and decided to sit down next to someone so I could get a feel for the club.

GARY:

I got some food and sat down at an open table.  Then, I was surprised that the lady ahead of me in the sign-up line sat down next to me.

CARMEN:

I introduced myself and asked about the club.

GARY:

Talking with her was easy.  We talked about skiing and hiking, and about the Sierra Club, of which she was a member.

CARMEN:

I liked talking with Gary, but I had to leave to pick up my daughter from basketball practice.  So, I started to say good-bye.

GARY

I really wanted to get her phone number, but we had only talked a short while, and it would have been too forward of me to ask then.  Instead, I said I would really like to get more info on the Sierra Club.  I gave her my business card and asked if she could send more information about it to me.

CARMEN:

I thought to myself that he could look up the Sierra Club on the internet, but I decided to humor him.

GARY: OK, the business card was a pretty transparent move, but it worked because she gave me her business card.

CARMEN + GARY:  And so, the rest is history. Whenever anyone asks how we met, we always say, “When we were both at Rock Bottom."

Action Ski Club
Camping Trip
 Memories
Part 1

Hello Actioneers, since we had to cancel Action’s Summer camping trip in the Lagunas I thought it would be nice to reminisce about some past trips I’ve led.  I’ve been leading camping trips for the club since 2000 in both the mountains and the desert and have had some great experiences with members past and present over the years.  There were too many pics for just one newsletter so I decided to split it two so there will be a second installment next month.

Note: I did my best to name people in the pics but I’m afraid I was unable to remember everybody…

In the spring of 2008 and 2009 I led Action to Palm Canyon campground in Anza Borrego State Park.

I hope you enjoy this trip down “memory lane”!

Sadly, in June 2010 he was murdered by an acquaintance who attempted to steal his fortune by transferring a large sum of money to a bogus bank account.  He was caught and eventually sentenced to life in prison.  For the unbelievable full story see
