With renewed social distancing restrictions in effect in San Diego County, Action is compelled to cancel our General meeting that was tentatively scheduled for August 5th.  In lieu of this, we are now planning our first General Meeting of the new fiscal year to be on September 9th (Wednesday after Labor Day Weekend) and we plan to hold this meeting at Olive Grove Park in Kearny Mesa. [Address: 6075 Printwood Street, San Diego, CA 92117].  With the sun setting just after 7pm, we will start as early at 5PM.  Please understand that due to too many uncertainties at this time, Action will not be providing any food or beverages until we obtain the necessary approvals.

Please bring the following items, as we plan to sit around a larger circle that will allow us to see each other, while meeting the required distancing rules:
  • Camping Chair
  • Beverage and Food of choice for yourself only
  • Jacket or blanket (in case is gets cooler)
  • Flash Light (if you plan to stay after sunset)
  • Happy Face wearing mandatory mask
We wish we could offer better news, but with new restrictions in place, I believe we can all be more hopeful for this plan to become reality in September.

Until then, please stay safe and let's all help flatten the curve for better days in the mountains before us.
Best, Roger

ZERMATT

PREVIEW

Jessica and Roger experienced Zermatt in 2008 last, so it’s long overdue to head back to the best ski paradise with Action Ski & Snowboard Club, which is currently tentatively still planned for March 2021.  Zermatt has already resumed lift operations since early June 2020.  With international travel restrictions expected to be lifted in the next couple of months, the Action Board will re-assess the feasibility of moving forward with this trip in 2021.  At best we are hoping to start selling the Action trip to Zermatt at the October 2020 General Meeting this year.  Provided all safety measures are in place and we have sufficient interest from our Club, we may be able bring these plans to fruition.  Fingers Crossed.

The 5 Top Reasons for visiting Zermatt:

  1. Voted best international ski resort in 2019, which considers many different factors (see award article)
  2. IKON Pass
  3. World Class Apres-Ski
  4. Three mountains to conquer, plus you can ski to Italy.
  5. Inspiration guaranteed with a grand view of the Matterhorn from all three ski resorts

Zermatt in the news:

Zermatt voted best ski area in the world for 2019

Snow-Online has once again selected the crème de la crème of winter sports – the ten best ski resorts in the world for the 2018/2019 winter season. The experts looked at over 250 ski resorts and tested them in ten categories. The outcome: Zermatt wins the title.

"Below the majestic Matterhorn, Zermatt offers a skiing experience that hardly any other ski resort in the world can match," is the verdict of the latest Snow-Online report, crowning the Matterhorn ski paradise the best ski resort in the world. The experts looked at over 250 ski resorts and tested them in ten categories. The opening of the spectacular Matterhorn glacier ride was particularly instrumental in helping Zermatt to claim first place. The Matterhorn ski resort has already won the top award in 2015 and 2016.

The test not only praises the innovation of the world's highest 3S cable car, but also the introduction of a dynamic pricing system that provides winter sports enthusiasts who book in advance with significant savings on ski passes. The award from the Swiss Tourism Association as a Family Destination shows that it is also an ideal choice for family holidays.

Zermatt scores a maximum of 10 points in each of the categories of advanced skiers, freeride and snow. 9 points are awarded in the categories service, terrain parks and on-mountain dining – with 8 points in the categories beginner, nightlife, value for money and family.

Further rankings:

2. Serfaus Fiss Ladis

3. Ski Arlberg

4. Whistler Blackcomb

5. Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn

6. Ischgl-Samnaun

7. Gröden

8. Sölden

9. Les 3 Vallées

10. Alta Badia

Zermatt's ambitious World Cup plans

Together with their Italian neighbours, Valtournenche, Zermatt is planning to co-host men’s and women's downhill races. For the first time in the history of the World Cup, a race will take place over a national border. The route is special for several reasons, including the fact that it will be the longest, highest downhill in the World Cup.

Due to the unexpected developments in the Lauberhorn downhill, there is considerable media interest in Zermatt’s World Cup plans. Daniel Luggen, Zermatt’s Director of Tourism, has however urged restraint: “It is not our intention to detract from Wengen.” Quite the opposite: “This traditional race is a key part of the ski race circuit and is vital for Swiss tourism and skiing as a whole.”

However, this approach does not contradict the intention of the Zermatt – Matterhorn destination to press ahead with their own World Cup plans, using their position as a leading ski resort to launch a new, innovative project that will boost the sport of ski racing. Working with the Italian resort of Valtournenche, Zermatt is planning to host cross-border downhill races, starting in Switzerland and finishing in Cervinia in Italy. It’s a kind of race around the Matterhorn, starting at 3,899 metres on the Gobba di Rollin above the Klein Matterhorn to Laghi Cime Bianche at 2,814 metres. Franz Julen, Chairman of Zermatt Bergbahnen AG and the driving force behind the project, says: “Hosting a skiing World Cup underlines our forward strategy; we want this race and we will do everything to ensure that it happens.” He also refers to the Alpine Crossing project, a CHF 150 million cable car link between Switzerland and Italy, currently under construction and due to open in autumn 2021. This will really open up the race area.

The idea for the race came from the neighbouring community of Valtournenche: “In the history of the World Cup, there has never been a race over national borders,” says the CEO of Cervino S.p.a, Federico Maquignaz. The plan is to host a men’s and women's downhill race every November, at the start of the season. The difference in altitude over the 5 km route is more than 1,000 metres, making it the longest World Cup route, and the highest. Most of the route uses existing, scenic glacier pistes. No significant construction is required to create the route, no trees need to be felled and the altitude means that it is snow-sure.

The project is strongly supported in the Zermatt – Matterhorn destination, with the ski club, hotels, cable cars, municipal communities and the tourism organisation all firmly behind the plans and the project’s strong chances of financial success. Initial discussions have already taken place with the FIS, the Italian ski association Fisi and Swiss Ski; reactions have been positive and encouraged all those involved to press forward with the project. “If everything goes to plan, we will ready for our first race in autumn 2022,” says Luggen confidently.

My favorite and first trip with Action was to Whitefish. It was absolutely the most beautiful scenery, with Glacier National Park behind abutting the back of the resort - spectacular views!

Since I didn’t know anyone well except Anna Marie, Ken, and Rick.... it was fun to be in a small hotel where we could mingle. Margarita night was great (Marjorie makes the BEST margaritas).

I skied with almost everyone in the group, following Mari down a cliff (scary) and Another group through the trees. Did I mention the trees have names? They are truly beautiful.

This fly away was the perfect way to meet some of the Action members, as it was a small trip. Being able to go to a place I didn’t know existed was truly special.
