Revelstoke Trip — Fly Away
Revelstoke, Canada March 7-13, 2019

We had 5 great ski days in Revelstoke, B.C. with 32 fellow Actioneers.   Although we had to get up at the crack of dawn to make our 6:40 flight out of San Diego, everyone managed to get to Lindberg Field on time.  We had a layover in Seattle, long enough to eat lunch, and flew by prop plane to Kelowna, B.C., the nearest airport.  From there we rode in a chartered bus to Revelstoke and checked into our hotel.

Located in the western edge of the Canadian Rockies on the banks of the Columbia River, Revelstoke is a charming ski town with a wide variety of bars and restaurants. In the morning, from our hotel we took a 20 minute shuttle bus ride to the ski area, a short walk to the gondola.  We rode up to the mid-mountain area and then caught  the “Stoke” chair to the top.  Several blue and blank runs return you to the bottom of the chair.  Another option is to traverse over to the “The Ripper” chair on the north face of the mountain with more blue and black runs and great tree skiing.

We got lucky with the timing of our trip because Revelstoke experienced 6 weeks of almost no new snow until a storm hit  a couple days before our arrival and dumped some fresh powder for us!  On top of that it snowed about a foot our last two days so conditions were excellent and several of us including Janet Katz, Leah Clark, Suzanne Rogers, Greg & Margie Pytanowski, and Marv Errickson did a lot of tree skiing.  My favorite run was “Denver Dollars” underneath the “Ripper” where I was skiing through fresh mid-calf champagne powder and jumping in and out of the trees on either side!  Another Fav was “Upper Snow Rodeo” and “Stihl Life Glades” (trees) near the “Stoke” chair.

Evenings in town were really fun.  One of the highlights was experiencing a laser light show on the shuttle accompanied by loud rock & roll!  Really cool, it reminded me of “Laserium” Pink Floyd shows at the Reuben H. Fleet in Balboa Park back in the 80’s!

A really fun event that trip leader Annette Behrman organized was axe throwing  at this place in town.  Similar to the game of darts, Action members competed against each other throwing hatchets at targets.  It takes a lot of practice to throw it so the blade spins one revolution and imbeds into the wooden target.  Ken Hodge and Rick Cole did really well!  They must have been practicing at home before the trip…

It was a fun and unusual activity and everyone really enjoyed themselves!
Thanks again to Leah and Annette for leading a great trip!

Squaw Valley — Fly Away
Tahoe, CA March 21-25, 2019

A quick flight to Sacramento, we arrived at our 8 bed-room cabin in Tahoe City — with minor lake view by 5PM on Thursday.  The cabin was comfortable with a giant fire place in the middle of the living room to keep the Action group warm and entertained.  Yes, that was the only entertainment, since there were no TV.  A happy hour with appetizers was served on Thursday night, with only a few going out for dinner nearby.

On Friday we were off to Squaw Valley Ski Resort, where 6 inches of powder was awaiting us.  What a treat.  Due to heavy traffic on the weekend, the Action group departed the cabin by 7:30 AM, which allowed us to arrive at preferred parking before the larger crowd would show up.

Saturday and Sunday the group decided to head to Alpine Meadows to fend off the bigger crowd that was expected at Squaw.  Alpine offered many ski options that seemed to suit most of the group, and yes, we were lucky to experience some blue bird days, which prompted us to stop at the Ice Bar at the bottom of the Sherwood Express on the back of the mountain.

Saturday night, Jessica and Roger cooked up a ton of pasta with three different sauces and plenty of salad and other side dishes.  As usual, the entire Action group assisted in the clean-up process, which was a tremendous help in keeping our kitchen tidy and ready for coffee and breakfast.  Marv, Dale, Sherry, Kathy, Susannah, Rich, Jim, Nancy, Julie, and Diane were superb at helping out.

Sunday night was our group dinner at the Lake Tahoe view Hacienda del Lago, which Nancy had orchestrated.  Since Susannah had driven her Subaru from Bend, we were fortunate to have an extra vehicle to transport our team, which definitely helped us provide a more flexible transportation schedule.

Due to a larger storm approaching late Monday, we took advantage of skiing a short day on Monday at Squaw, but winds were already starting to blow, which helped us justify our 2PM departure, which allowed all of us to get home at our expected times.  Sherry and Susannah extended their trip and headed to Mammoth for some more glorious turns.

This trip was fortunately very smooth without serious injuries and on time schedules to deem a repeat to a different location in the near future.
